Meet the Odu mentors
We are Black scholars in different fields of STEM sharing our time between doing research and empowering the next generation of Black scientists.
Dr. Arildo Dias
Founding member - Senior mentor
I am a plant ecologist interested in understanding how climate (micro- and macroclimate) influence the diversity, form, and function of organisms from local to global scales. I am currently a guest researcher at Goethe University in Germany. I did my Masters and PhD at the Campinas State University (UNICAMP).
Languages spoken: Portuguese-BR, English and German.
Dr. Bruno Soares
Senior mentor
I am an aquatic ecologist interested on understanding the factors determining species distributions. I am currently a postdoc at the Limnology lab of the Federal University of Rio the Janeiro. where I did my Masters and PhD. Learn more about my research here.

I am a computer scientist interested in how to use math to solve problems related to volumetric visualization, data visualization and geometric modelling. I am currently an Assistant Professor at the Rio de Janeiro State University. I received my MSc and PhD in Applied Mathematics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. During my PhD I have been a visiting scholar of the Computer Science Department at New York University. Website

Dr. Rodrigo Carmo
Senior mentor
I earned my BSc in Biology, MSc and PhD at the Universiade Federal de Pernambuco and an internship at the Texas A&M University. I am currently an Adjunct Professor at the Universiade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. I am an ecologist focussing on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in tropical forests under climate change. Specifically, I study the relationship between environmental stressors and the resiliency/sustainability of the Caatinga forest.

MSc. Marianne Bello
Founding member - Junior mentor
I am a biologist graduated from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro-UERJ, my main areas of interest are Ecology and Ethnoprimatology. I am always looking for new challenges and questions about primates and their relation with the environment - including humans. Currently, I am a PhD student at UERJ.

MSc. Jefferson Amaral
Junior mentor
I am an ecosystem ecologist interested in Eco-Evo feedbacks and the evolution of the placenta in animals. Currently, I'm a Ph.D. student at the Washington University in St Louis (Missouri, USA). I received my Master's in Ecology and Evolution and my BSc in Biological Sciences from the State University of Rio De Janeiro (our beloved UERJ).

MSc. Willams Oliveira
Junior mentor
I am a PhD student in Plant Biology at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. I am interested in understanding the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances and climate change on plant-pollinator interactions, reproductive functional diversity and agricultural production of pollinator-dependent crops.
