At Odu we believe that in order to increase participation of minoritized groups in science, we have to challenge the status quo that produces racism in academia. It is time to go beyond diversity statements to start promoting the structural changes needed. We do that by empowering Black students to understand and fight systemic racism to overcome the sense of not belonging in science. By doing so, we aspire to increase diversity among STEM students and, in the long term, increase the number of BIPOC scientists. We hope that this initiative can help make academia a more friendly environment for racially marginalized students, promoting diversity, equity and justice.
